VENDOR SPOTLIGHT // SHEALYN ANGUS WEDDINGS AND EVENTS

Good morning friends! A warm welcome to Shea from Shealyn Angus Weddings and Events

At SHEA, we make wedding planning streamlined, easy, and completely enjoyable. It's really as simple as that. We're proud to offer complete wedding planning and design services to produce those truly unforgettable events. From day of coordination to full service planning, our portfolio options are fully customizable to fit each and every event planning need. Our brides and grooms are always impressed with our balance of creative flare and design, matched only by our detailed planning process. We're really blessed to be a part of such a special moment in our clients lives and we never take that for granted!

How long have you been working in the wedding industry? Five years. One and a half as planner/owner of Shealyn Angus Weddings & Events.

What makes your business unique? What makes SHEA unique is our personalized planning process. From the moment a client first meets us, the process is completely custom to them. Some clients like to wash their hands of the planning and pass it all off to us- we're excited to take on that challenge and produce a flawless event! Or, sometimes clients really want that hands on approach and we're more than welcome to have them be a part of absolutely every step. Every relationship is different and every dynamic is different. We'll mold the process to be whatever is most comfortable to you, while still leading the way and guiding you in producing that incredibly special day.

Favourite part of your business? I think I could answer this question in two different ways...

One of my favourite elements of the "business of weddings" is the honour that it is to be a part of such a special occasion in two peoples lives. I never take that for granted. Especially since planning my own wedding last fall, I understand how special the moments are on your wedding day and how lucky I am to be a part of dozens of weddings each year.

Another one of my favourite parts of planning a wedding is the design process. Each of my Full Service clients receive what I call a "Signature Style File". This is quite a thorough document outlining what I envision for their wedding aesthetic from start to finish. From colour palettes, to fabrics, to decor selections and floral ideas. This document is sent to my clients within the first few weeks of planning and becomes the "holy grail" of references when we're working with vendors to pull the whole picture together. I get chills every time a design comes together and I see the reaction on my clients faces as they picture what their day is going to look like.

What inspires you? I get a lot of inspiration from music. I know that sounds weird, but I always picture what the soundtrack would sound like during an event that I'm planning. Music is such a moving medium of art and is one of the most tangible way to set a mood.  I always listen to different genres of music when designing weddings and it plays a huge part in cultivating creativity in my designs.

I'm also inspired by home decor and design. I think interior designers are incredible artists and I'm always inspired by the textiles, colours, and fabrics that they use.

One last thing that inspires me is pattern and stationery. I love taking a floral or geometric pattern and using that as inspiration for an event. There are so many tangible design elements that you can take from a simply pattern of garden roses- from bring the soft petals to life in the fabric of a lounge area, to using that pattern on invitations and menus, to creating a trellis of blooms for the seating chart. The design elements are endless.

Who is your mentor/hero in the industry? Oh goodness, this is a tough one! There are so many people in this industry who inspire me to work hard to achieve greatness. Although, I don't think I like the word "hero" because I believe that everyone has the ability to be truly great, while completely being themselves.

I really admire Melissa Haggerty and the fierce women at SpectacularSpectacular. Not only are they super nice chicks, but the work that they are putting out in terms of creativity and ingenuity is beyond. Always pushing the boundaries of creating stellar, unique events. If only I could be a fly on the wall of her brain for a day.

I also admire people like Rebecca Grinnals & Kathryn Arce who are the founders of the Engage! summits. I am absolutely a huge cheerleader for those who work towards bringing people together in an industry that has so much competition. It's very high up on my bucket list to attend one of their conferences and learn from some of the best wedding industry professionals in the world.  #lifegoals

On your day off...where would we find you? On my day off you'd probably find me eating and drinking with my hubby and friends! We love eating out at great restaurants and drinking lots of wine. You could also find me visiting my family up north, binge watching reality television, or sitting in a spa. Oh gosh, if only I could combine all of these things into one day- what a day that would be!

If you weren't a wedding vendor, what would be your dream job? Someone who got to travel and stay in fancy hotels for free. I'm not sure what that job would be called, but I want it!

What great wedding trends are you seeing this year? Colour! Not that it ever truly went away for me because my clients can be super adventurous when it comes to colour. But I love that we are seeing clients step away from the traditional ivory/green/bridal tone weddings and move more into great colour palettes like jewel tones, lots of blues and greys, peaches and coppers, etc.

I also love that clients are stepping away from traditional head table/guest table set ups and moving into a more contemporary communal setting. Long harvest tables with the bride and groom sitting in the middle. It's so much more inclusive and gives the couple such a more authentic experience at their own wedding.

Do you have any practical advice for couples planning a wedding? Oh goodness, this could be a long response. But I'll narrow it down to the tip that is forgotten the most:

This is YOUR day. You're going to get opinions and feedback from everyone about everything. But at the end of the day this day is a reflection of you as a couple, and your love. Your friends and family will appreciate an authentic wedding experience much more than one that is just a show. Do what feels right for you, hire vendors that fit with your personality, and take time during the day to remember that you just make a life long commitment. If your love is on display during your day, you've done your job right!
