Happy Thursday friends! We're featuring Truth and Tales Photo and Cinema today. Take a few minutes and read up on this fabulous team of 4!
Truth & Tales was founded on the the ideal that we are better together. With our years of experience we love to bring our clients’ personal stories from concept to completion. Our goal is to create visual memories that will last a lifetime, images and video that our couples want to go back to time and time again. It’s our goal to capture the love story as it unfolds throughout the wedding day.
How long have you been working in the wedding industry? Truth & Tales founded 5 years ago. Drew Unruh is wrapping up his 10th summer photographing weddings, Matt Unruh his 5th, Sarah MacLeod her 5th, and Sarah-Jade Loewen her 4th.
What makes your business unique? One of the main things that makes us unique is that we are taking a collaborative approach to our company. We are four individuals who love working with each other. We are unique because each one of our owners brings their own personal passion, insight, and artistic ideals to each wedding we capture. We have an open demeanour to the creative process and feel like we can sharpen each others' skills through feedback and growth. Our creative process is extremely collaborative, not just amongst the 4 of us but also with our couples.
Favourite part of your business? We honestly love meeting the friends and families of our couples. It's the biggest compliment ever when we walk away from a wedding feeling like we've made new friends. After a recent wedding the sister of the bride (who was a previous bride of ours only a few months earlier) came up to us and had to exclaim "I hope it's ok that I feel like we're just great friends now!" It was the best thing we could have ever heard. It's a huge honour to be invited into people's lives in this way, and we never want to take that for granted.
What inspires you? We're inspired by good wine, great food, and even better conversation. We are friends first, and business partners second. We are inspired and pushed forward by each other. Working in the creative sector can sometimes feel lonely, so we are combating that by being together and putting each other first. We also love travel, and so we are inspired by all of the things we get to take in when we hop on a plane.
Who is your mentor/hero in the industry? In the early days of Truth & Tales (we were even going by a different, and slightly embarrassing other name) Drew, our creative director, had the unique opportunity to sit down with Nataschia Wielink over a coffee at her studio. He's not even entirely sure she would remember it, but he most certainly does. Her openness to answer questions, be available, and not make him feel silly for not knowing things influenced the way that Truth & Tales as a company works hard to interact with other wedding professionals to this day. Not only is she an amazing photographer who we get to shoot with on occasion when we're producing wedding films, she is also an influential presence in our companies growth. Plus, come on, have you seen her work?! Gorgeous!
On your day off...where would we find you? If it is just one day off, you would find us relaxing with a glass of wine or one of Raf's (Sarah's Husband) amazing craft beers. If we happen to have a few off in a row you'll find Drew on a plane to some exotic locale with Guatemala again soon, Sarah-Jade & Tom working on a new song for their band Copper & Iron or spending time out doors with their daughter, Sarah & Raf on some wonderful active adventure with their kids, and Matt would be sneaking in a nap before taking his FOUR children splash in the wading pool and enjoy and ice-cream in their home town of Niagara-on-the-Lake.
What great wedding trends are you seeing this year? We love venues that are utilizing long harvest tables. It creates a sense of togetherness and allows for increased space throughout the venue.
Do you have any practical advice for couples planning a wedding? Love every moment of it. It's an incredible time to surround yourself with your people and celebrate the love of your person. Select professionals who are willing to work with you to hone your vision. And always remember to steal away with your love a few times throughout the wedding day. No cameras, no others, just the two of you for 5min here, and 10min there.
